Possible Vent Gleet?

Good Morning All,

I believe that I have 12 chickens (now down to 11) and I believe a few may possibly have vent gleet as they have yucky butts and a couple with bare bottoms which I am not seeing mites or anything. I just lost one of the chickens this morning. About a month ago I changed over to fermenting feed and they all seem to like it (all flock feed mixed with a little scratch and I also offer oyster shell and grit in separate containers at all times. They get fresh water and food daily and have a large run which I keep clean as well as a clean coop. My chickens are from 2019 so they are older ladies. Does anyone have any natural suggestions of what I can do to help the few that I am noticing the yucky bottom issue on?

Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you,

Joy

Hi, Joy,

Welcome to BYC!

Have you noticed if their rear end reeks? Vent gleet stinks.

You're doing the best thing for that by fermenting as that's high in probiotics. If it is vent gleet, you can also pick up a tube of Monostat or the generic, as what's in it helps them too. Folks just smear a little on their vent (after bathing and drying) and give a little orally as well. They do that two or three times a day for a couple of days and improvement is seen pretty quickly.

Hi thanks for your response..well they are real fast and not letting me catch them haha..problem is I hurt my shoulder possible rotator cuff issue feom a recent fall so I am not doing so well with my wrangling these days. When I squat down and rhey come to me I am not smelling anything foul and the coop doesn't smell either...I just am not sure what is going on. I am hoping to get a friend of mine to help me this weekend to try to wrangle a couple so I can check them well. The monitor is the type you get at the drugstore for women? Do i just like put it on at night when they are roosting?

Ouch, sorry about your shoulder! :hugs

Yes, and yes, at night is the easiest when they're roosting, although it's nicer if they have their butt area all cleaned up too, but in their case, maybe have to skip the butt baths.
