Premature chick and burst yolk

What a cute name!

Powder is such a sweetie, I'm glad she's improving.

I think you are right, the egg sac is drying up and will hopefully fall off on its own.

Keep us posted on how she's doing.

If she didn’t still have the yolk attached or if she wasn’t a premature chick I would put her in with the other chicks but I know the second oldest chick, Sydney, would peck at the yolk, I know this because she pecks at every new chick that enters the cage, I don’t know if it’s preening thing or a “hey who are you and what are you doing in my cage” thing

Update on Powder!! Powder’s yolk is still attached but I think they want to go in with the other chicks soon, they got to spend some time with a chick who came out all gooey but I’ve just put said chick in with the others, just gave Powder some food too

I hear Powder cheeping from the incubator right now, I think I will weigh out the options on if we think Powder can go in with her siblings today or not when my sister wakes up

This is my first time dealing with a premature chick and only my second time hatching so I’m glad Powder has made it this far!

If the yolk sac is still attached, I would refrain from putting her in with the others. They will certainly peck at it and if they get a hold of it it will tear out anything still attached on the inside.

A better option would be to provide a wire mesh divider. Give her her own space, close by but separated from the others. A "you can look, but you cannot touch" space. This will provide her comfort. She can sit up next to the wire and "feel" the others from a safe place.

:)

Thanks for the advice! Luckily we have wire mesh outside so we can do it as soon as possible!

You are welcome. As I have thought about this, I would also add something to the bottom of the wire mesh - like clear packing tape on each side, so they others cannot reach through the mesh to peck at the sac.

If you put the adhesive to where it sticks together you shouldn't get any baby feathers, yolk sac, etc stuck to the adhesive.

Update on Powder, she still hasn’t had the yolk fall off, she almost gave me a heart attack earlier when I checked on her but she is ok, she is very vocal, yesterday we were more busy with washing one of the siblings of Powder who had dried membrane stuck to her but today I will try to make a little zone for Powder in a tub so we can add Powder and the other chicks in it so Powder can socialise with the others while the yolk is falling off, we will be using a tub because there are too many chicks for the small cage they are in right now, 6 in the cage and Powder in the incubator and there wouldn’t be enough room for Powder’s little area in the cage they are in right now, an alternative solution would be to put the cage in the tub, put the other chicks in the tub and put Powder in the cage in the tub but we will see what will be the best thing for Powder

Update, Powder did not do well out of the incubator and separate from the other chicks, Powder is still alive but has been placed back in the incubator, we found her motionless in the little area we put her in, she was still alive but once placed back in the incubator she started cheeping and moving again, we will keep a close eye on her as she recovers from this, we may have to wait till either the yolk falls off and she can go in with the other chicks or till she is bigger and can maintain a little more heat than she can now

Also, does anyone know how long it takes for a dried burst yolk to fall off? Wanting to know so I can figure out when it should fall off
