im not sure? i have bantams and chckens for eggs but want to breed games too and alot of people say that pumpkin hulseys are one of the gamest (not sure if thats a word lol) breeds around. plus i love their color! and theyre name of course!

The gameness attribute is going to require that you have ability to separate males from each other permanently once they reach adulthood. The relative gameness is a matter of intepretation and often subject to vested interest of someone trying to say their line is better than someone elses. Generally speaking games are of better coloration, feathering and outright physical ability than non-game breeds. I think they are hands down more intelligent than all non-game breeds and give the different jungle fowl species a run for their money.

If serious, then look for folks in your area that you can talk to before diving into games. They can give you a more detailed heads-up on what to expect if your are to proceede.

If you are looking for the looks without all the aggression then consider red jungle fowl. They got the looks and run a bit smaller.

im ready to move up to games!

i know people who know other people who raise game but keep it secret because of illegal purposes. i just want games so i can show off to my friends and produce a good line. i am planning on seperating all cocks obviously and i will train each individual but i will NEVER fight them....just as a hobby...by the way im a high school student and im in FFA and i want to show them (if your allowed to)

Breeding for quality requires many bird generations and if you are serious, literaly at least a couple hundred birds that that must be evaluated each generation. It usually takes two years to get male birds to point where they can be evaluated as game birds. A great deal of record keeping also required. You would also need to have several families within your line and take care not to let results of poor inbreeding or outbreeding degrade your line. The evaluation if birds to be game will need to be based on illegal activities which can be expensive even without consideration for potential legal problems. To be honest, games that reach adulthood tend to live longer than other breeds as needed for the evaluation process and their upkeep is quite expensive.

If breeding for color, then you can get sloppy with breeding and still have something that is quite pleasing to the eye. You can show games in some states and gameness attribute is not measured but they need to act all tough and stuff in the show pen.

Then you can likely get started by getting a trio. If you are going to engage in selective breeding, then you will need to convert that trio in a larger number of adults so you can pick and choose which individuals will be used as breeders. This is where you will need to consult individuals experienced in breeding for show. To simplify matters, starting with birds all of the same genotype for color is the way to go. Remember, this can be a long-term effort. Quality of birds start with can effect quality of what have later, especially if you do not know how select best animals for breeders. If you are good and have the time and resources, you can take a line that looks like crap and improve it. To speed up infusing new blood can help or hurt, depending on genetics of birds.

How many birds can you hatch and rear? How many adults can you keep? Even though you may be breeding for color, most color strains, if that is where you start, are game enough that roosters will need to be isolated. You need to do a resource check.

i can probably hatch alot but only keep about a dozen since i already have some chickens but i will give the ones i dont want to my grandpa who live on a farm and if a hen dies or something ill go get a replacement one from him. since im interested in the dozen cross breed order from rocky top game farm because of the color..lets say if i crossed two mixed breeds like those what would i get? nice brave cocks or scaredy ugly cocks?

F50myster,
Keep you options open. Go to an event where games are shown and talk to those in know. With those folks you are likely to see birds before you acquire them and you will not feel so pressured. You will also meet real cockers as well, even though they will likely be secure enough not to feel need to tell you they are real cockers.
