I get shredded paper for basicly nothing. I have an industreal shredder (will do whole news paper at once) that I got VERY cheep from a store going out of busness. And al my neighbors and family, and even some church members save papers, junk mail, etc. for me. So my question is, can I use it in the hens nesting boxes in place of straw? (currantly $5.75 a bale for anything nice and dry). My husband used to do a lot of shipping, still does, just not quite as much. That is why we got the shredder in the first place. But we get more paper than even we know what to with. Bond fire once a year is fun, but not usefull. Tried it in the cats litter box... that, was a bad idea, never again...

I have been using shredded paper (bills, junk mail, but not newspaper) for over a year now. I have a crosscut shredder so the paper strips are 1/4"x2". The chickens have no problem laying their eggs in it. If it sticks to the eggs it's easy to pull off too. I use the paper in the nest boxes only and shredded bedding as a deep litter method in the coop.

I've used shredded paper in next boxes before. I found it matted down more than I liked after a while. Mixed with hay or shavings it would probably perform better.

As litter in the roost house it worked pretty well.
