Standing room in chicken run

How important is it to be able to stand upright in the chicken run? I've seen a run with a kind of picket fence around but it was not very high with chicken wire covering the top.

I wanted my run tall enough for me to get in without ducking at all. It makes cleaning and egg gathering alot easier for me. I'd hate to have to hunch over while cleaning the coop out. :)

Mine will be 6 feet tall, at least. I can't imagine trying to clean, or get to a hurt/sick chicken, in a short little run. Your back with thank you for a run tall enough to walk into.

Very important!! When I built my new coop I made sure that I could stand up in the run no problem. It made cleaning, socializing with birds, and life in general more easy.

Our 1st attempt at building a run had a door you had to duck to get in, low 5' sides with a 6' center. Around about the 1,000th time DH & I had bashed our heads on the low door and I had a sore back from daily cleaning the run we decided enough is enough!

We now have a wonderful tall run (one end is 6' and the other is 7') and a human size door we can actually walk through without head injuries. Love it!

Do yourself a favor, make your run tall enough to stand up in. It will make your life a lot easier (and less painful).

Yes,
I agree with everyone.....
Make the run tall enough to stand in. You will bond so much more with your chickens.

I agree, we can stand in both the coop & run, makes cleaning, visiting the chickens and other chores easy. We had a pre-fabbed coop/run for a short time and only used it a time or two when the chickens were babies for playtime outdoors. What a pain to crawl on hands & knees to retrieve them! Can't imagine doing that long term... for cleaning, getting to a stray egg or sick chicken.
