Stupid overengineered washing machine RANT!!

Just got done with the repairman, dumb little plastic impeller in the pump slipped off the dumb little brass shaft and shredded a rubber o-ring. I thought cool! a couple of dollars worth of parts and we can have it running, too bad about the flat service call rate but oh well, such is life, now I know how to fix something else myself (I always study repairmen to learn their jobs for next time something breaks). WRONG. Apparently it is not possible to even order the small parts that make up the pump unit, entire unit has to be replaced. $146 part to replace a perfectly good electric motor and pump housing assembly for a darn impeller and rubber O-ring. I can see how the stupid impeller unit goes together but I can't get the friggen small parts to do the repair! Why can't the enviro-NAZIS that are telling me what kind of dang lightbulbs to use in my barn (the squiggly ones don't work in the cold and are full of mercury not allowed in a butchering area) get after this racket of requiring entire units of proprietery parts to be replaced rather than selling components when they are obviously repairable. Seems much more wasteful to me than a few KWH of electricity per year.

Maytag can KMA, I'm buying the cheap made in China appliance next time! Shoot some holes in it and make a fish smoker when it breaks down.

Do yourself a favor when you get ready to replace the washing machine. DO NOT buy a HE machine. We got a new Maytag HE machine about a year ago. It uses less water all right. Not even enough to get the cloths wet sometimes. I thank Obama every time I put my still dirty cloths on. Enviro-Nazis is right.

Make sure you look up reviews if you buy a new washing machine. My MIL bought a new one last year that is suppose to be energy efficient and checks to see how much water to use based on the clothes to save on water. Well if you do one load it takes a hour and a half before it is done. Takes about as long as the dryer. The old one she had and even one my dad had only took about 20 minutes for a load. I don't like waiting around all day to do one load of wash especially if there isn't anything in the dryer yet.

My HE has a cycle that only takes 30 minutes but also one that takes a hour and half.

Maybe I should do this first

DH is one of the engineers that designs those machines for GE and you wouldn't believe the hoops they have to jump through. It is ridiculous the things they have to prove, things machines would never do in a home.

What kind of washing machine do you have? I would like to post nice things about the Samsung kind we have but I know as soon as I say something nice about mine something will happen. I love my washer and dryer!

Yeah, that is what type it is now that I got remembering. My MIL has to buy that detergent that is used for HE machines.

I've had mine for over a year and haven't had any issues with it. Yeah I know it required a bit more time but I'm not the kind that waits around, so I do something else while it is washing. Many more times often than not, I forgot about the wet load in the washer for a week, peeeeeeeeeee ew!

Now if there is a washer that can dry after it washes, all in one unit, I'm game!

I have owned eight washing machines in 42 years of marriage. From the real cheapies to the state of the art but hugely expensive. Got my latest one last month. My conclusion about domestic equipment is this.
It doesn't matter how much you pay for an item as the expensive ones go wrong just as readily as the cheap ones.

No one ever wants to repair anything, and it is more cost effective to scrap the item and buy another.

I think the manufacturers stand two rooms away when they spray the enamel on these things because it is peeling and chipping off in no time!

You can pay for an extended warranty which turns out to be half as much again as the original purchase price.

It's all a con if you ask me!

I had an expensive fisher paykel washer and it was nothing but trouble. I hated dealing with repairs.The warranty was a joke. I have a front loader now.When it breaks I will just buy another washer on sale.Cheaper to buy new than to pay $200 every couple of repairs.
