Vicks Vapor Rub

Wow. I didn't mean to make people fight. I was just stating my opinion and experiences. Going back to my corner.

I have an aussie dog. hartguard monthly heartworm preventative is toxic and causes ceizures and death in 'some' hearding breeds because the ivermectin it contains can enter the brain unlike in other breeds. Take the risk, though possibly rare, or give her ivermectin??? hmmm...I am choosing an alternate preventative!!!

If you want to use Vck's - consider the 'baby version'.

Nice smileys. Its just that yesterday I found out just how much one can learn about life on BYC. I joined in a thread about ameraucanas and wowsers. Thats when I learned that ameraucanas are a touchy subject.

Sorry didn't mean to get off the original subject. I like vapor rub and have had no ill effects from its use. That being said maybe one should research it more before making a decision for themselves.

Edit: There is a baby version? Now that might be something I should look into.

luckily I have never had a pecking problem- even growing up when my family had 20 chickens.

Suppose it may happen some day though and its nice to know what people say works... I may look into the baby vicks at that point in time.

I do know though that last time I read a vicks jar it did say not to cover large areas of the body with it...I wonder if thats why?

My uncle works for the food and drug administration- maybe I will ask him!?

I got so busy with things I lost sight of this thread. I'm sorry that it caused some people to get upset. I didn't mean for that to happen, I was just looking for some info.
I housed the injured chickens in the house for a week so the wounds could heal up. Before i put them back out i did use a little Vicks on the small scabs that were there. So when I put the injured ones back out, some came up to them and saw the sores and went to peck, but they must have smelled it because they backed off and left them alone.
I have had a few problems with some pecking at others, but if I put a little vicks on it, they stop pecking them.
I didn't know there was vicks for babies, maybe I'll try that if there is anymore pecking problems.
Thank you everyone for your input. I love this place and I'm so glad I found it.

hi all,
What an interesting thread.
My mom used to make me swallow a ladle of that gunk when I was a toddler. uughh I can still taste it!!

I have a Bantan rescue Roo that had leg mites so bad his legs looked like he had elephantitis, smothered him with Vaseline (cheaper than Vicks Vapo rub) keep him alone for two days. And now one leg is totally healed, other well on the way.

The hens were pecking him until his legs were a bloody mess, but now they all are behaving fine.
Vaseline.........go figure.

hey love the peeps under the chair, care if I join? I have a cookie.
