What did you do in the garden today?

I had to cut two air layered mango branches off and plant them. Because their roots were growing out of the pods. The parent was labeled Pickering, but her fruit didn't look like the ones on YouTube. However, the fruit was sweet, so I decided to grow it, and I am now able to clone the seedling. The original labeled Pickering plant died after it fruited..........

My peach bagging experiment is not going well. I 'bagged" baby peaches using nylon stocking to protect them from bugs. I bagged around 20-30 of them, as an experiment. Around a third or so of them have already dropped... 😕 Of the ones that haven't, it's clear that the nylon stockings have not deterred the bugs whatsoever. While there is no hole in the stocking, there's still a hardened "goo" on the inside of stocking and the peach is marred in that spot. I can't really tell if it's like a hardened gummiosis or if it's from some insect or what. I'm keeping the stockings on and just observing to see what happens, but it's clear that next year I'm going to have to probably use something different.

Oh, and the single plum that was developing also dropped. It got about the size of a walnut and then fell off... I'm guessing it wasn't fully fertilized but that's just a guess. None of the other baby plums grew at all. They all fell off almost immediately. I'm really hoping to get a Toka Plum later this year to help with pollination. If the other existing plum tree doesn't flower, I'll cut it down.

Busy day today. Picked up chicken feed, shavings and EZ Tack straw at TSC. Filled the gas tank, shopped for people and dog food. After lunch I moved the 7 bags of top soil to the backyard then filled the last new raised bed with the top soil and well aged chicken run compost. The grandkids are coming over to celebrate Earth Day tomorrow and plant vegetables and prepare the new strawberry bags for planting. The Spring flowers are blooming now finally.

Hubby takes off for Charlotte, NC tomorrow to visit his dad. I'm using the time at home alone to get a lot done in the garden.

I bought 3 teeny rhubarb crowns at a garden center which I soaked in water for a few hours and then wrapped in damp paper towel. I plan to plant them in pots in the green house. Try to baby them a bit so that they'll grow happily.
