Hello!

I haven’t been around here for a while...kinda missed it!

Anyway, we’re looking into possibly getting a few more chicks this year. We’re a little hesitant to get day-olds online from past experience, so we’re trying to find somewhere local that we could get week-old chicks.

We’re specifically looking for somewhere that we would be able to get only females, and for breeds that lay blue eggs (or speckled Sussex chicks). It would also be good to know if any places even if you’re not positive of the breeds they have available. Anything helps!

Thank you!

Hi there. :frow

Do you guys have any feed stores around that might be carrying chicks right now? That is where most of us are able to get sexed chicks in a variety of breeds, that are disease free and the feed store has most often already absorbed any chicks failing due to shipping stress.

Otherwise MAYBE craigslist farm and garden section... some people order a variety of pullets and sell off what they didn't need but had to order to be able to fulfill the required minimum for shipping.

Beware any chicks with a broody. And know that personal hatches often are 50% male if they are being offered.

Good luck! :fl

I ordered mine from Meyer Hatchery, the have a shipping guarantee and I was very happy with my chicks. If you have a post office where you can pick them up I would consider ordering.

I posted in your Meyer thread, but I'll expand here in case you miss it:

Jersey Chickens in Jackson, NJ has a variety of breeds. They offer various levels of sexing (autosexing/sex links, standard breeds vent sexed @ 90% accuracy, and straight runs), so you'll want to read up to decide which breeds will work for you. They offer started pullets as well depending on what doesn't sell. If you'd rather pick up in person than have chicks mailed to you, this is a good option. We got our first flock from them several years ago, and they're all healthy, strong layers. They do vaccinate for Marek's.

You also have Slope Brook Farm in Colts Neck and Fancy Mothercluckers in Allentown. I have gotten chicks from both, highly recommended. Jae Lyn from Fancy Motheercluckers is a sweetheart. Smaller operation and very personable service.

If you are going to ship...
deer run farm in md has ameracauna (although they are straight run) but their welsummer are pullets. Extremely healthy chicks.

And the merry hen has cream legbars (blue eggs)... pullets and cockerels and she’s awesome to deal with.. I just got mine shipped..
