Why do people kill chipmunks?

I don't know if there is a relationship but I use to have a lot of mice around my yard - then chipmunks began to appear - now I have a lot of chipmunks around and no mice - I'm wondering if the chipmunks kill the mice - If so - I guess I would rather have the chipmunks than the mice - they are cute looking things - as long as they stay outside in the yard-

I personally don't think they do that much damage here at my home in NH. Sure they tunnel in all the stone walls but no walls have ever fallen down and I have never had anything more than entertainment. My two Border Terriers will chase them down and do what Terriers do on occasion. I do however have a problem with the imported red squirrels here and I do not hesitate to take out the nasty freeloaders who love my sumflowers that I feed to my native wild birds. They are quite brazen and come right up on my deck, eat way too much food, and destroy wat too many feeders. They shake when they see me now!

It's sad because they are so cute

They do tons of expensive damage - we thought they were just cute for way too long. Hey we were former Chicago kids - what did we know? We must have had thousands of generations of them in the almost 42 years of living here.We are the original inhabitants of this home and they were present at day one. They have undermined the large front step to the point where it is hollowed out underneath and the concrete is drooping and falling off.

I tried moth balls last fall and they took them away. I have no idea what they did with them but thru fall and all winter the stench of mothballs permeated the basement, garage and laundry room to the point of giving me severe headaches and who knows what other health problems.I guess it was their revenge. Does the mouse bucket work for them too - ours are big, husky chipmunks - maybe they are the cause of the mice coming inside. I thought mice stay out in warm weather .

We have a fox that uses our yard as one of his dens and he marks alot of the territory. Apparently that only works for other foxes, the mice and chipmunks don't seem to care. The people across the street said they have caused loads of damage, they have steps that are all cockeyed since the little cuties insist on burrowing under everything.

They surely DON'T taste like chicken. Until recently I had numerous dogs and cats that liked to kill chipmunks, but nothing would eat them. Now I have a cat that will eat the heads off and leave the body.

If you take a whiff the fresh ones smell pretty darn musky.
