Started the thread for the Self Blues yesterday! Forgot to add the link here til just now. I also have a thread for my blue/black birchen marans, if anyone is interested...
Here's the Self Blues...
Oh, and also, I'll be adding another thread for my Self Blues on Wednesday when they turn a week old. There's only 2 Lavenders and a Black Split, but I'll be keeping track of them anyways. I know they're notoriously difficult to sex so I definitely want to include them. And this coming Spring...
Today's the day I take Week 2 pics of all the babies! I already think I've spotted 2-3 boys in the wheatens. The 3rd I'm not sure about because if it is a boy, I think it's a splash wheaten, so may take a bit longer to know with him. The other 2 though, I'm pretty sure they're boys. A wheaten...
Yes, he was. And a good boy too. Very kind and gentle with his ladies. A real gentleman. His daddy was like that, too. His daddy, Hugo (wheaten) had the cutest face I've ever seen on any chicken ever. I really wish I had a pic of him. He actually died defending his girls from a raccoon, bless...
I have always said that Ameraucanas are without a doubt the cutest chickens. All of my boys especially have had the cutest faces I've ever seen on a chicken.
Only old pic I could find...my BW cockerel D'Artagnon ❤:
I would imagine you'd have to cross to wheaten in order to get back to Isabel in just a few generations. Doesn't seem like a good idea to throw in a whole other E locus base....might make things a bit murky. Just my 2 cents though.
Oh! I didn't know they were used for that. Man...maybe I should've read up on them more before getting them, lol. I mostly got them to make Isabel Ameraucanas as a project. I do plan on having good Self Blues too though.
Yeah, I didn't know she'd have the face markings. I've never had a split bird before. I seem to recall her saying there was a chance she may have to pull from her pen that had some splits to fill the order. I told her that was fine. It was the only egg with the letter of that pen on it, so I'm...
Heard from the breeder this morning. That egg came from her pen that has some splits in it, so the baby is definitely a black split. At least I know what she is now. Oh well. She's still adorable!
Oh jeez. Well, good thing I put a legband on her so I don't accidentally breed her to my blues later or something. I hope I'm able to tell what she really is at some point, otherwise she'll be doomed to the layer flock with the rest of the rejects, lol. Like my little splash baby that I believe...
I really wish the breeder would've texted me back today. As soon as this baby hatched I asked her what it might be, but she hasn't responded yet. Hopefully I'll hear from her tomorrow and she can shed some light.
Yeah, I keep wondering if there's a chance she's blue split to lavender, cuz she's not BLACK, just really dark blue looking. Is it possible to randomly get a blue in a black/lav cross?
Lol, I thought so. The lavenders usually look much more uniform in color, right, even as chicks?
No, she's definitely not a silver. These are my silver babies...
So here's my little lavender baby all fluffed up. She still doesn't look lavender and looks darker than any of the blue marans I just hatched out. Is she a split?
Ok, so I'm currently hatching out some self blues for the first time and I have a question for those of you who may have hatched them out before. Would it be normal for a lavender to hatch out looking EXACTLY like a blue? I thought they'd look like a splash kinda, but this baby (only 1 has...
In regards to the Brown Red Ams and difficulty finding them, I saw a breeder on the ABC directory and tried contacting her. I really want some of every color but white (just personal preference- also my birds free range and they wouldn't be very safe) but she hasn't responded. I was trying to...
