This is what I use under my seedling tray. I grow year round indoors using hydroponics so I can start what ever I want when ever I want. What ever my wife and I don't eat gets fed to the chickens.

Of course perhaps the size of the chicken may matter however living in Colorado I've seen it get down to -35F and have never used supplemental heat and haven't had an issue with chickens freezing. I've worked on a farm/ ranch with 250+ down to my small flock of 5.

Living in Colorado we actually have been having some pretty nice weather for this time of year. Although we did hit a low of 23 degrees 5 days ago this week its mid to upper 60's during the day and mid to upper 30's at night. It's suppose to cool off starting Monday with highs in the upper 50's...

Looking good! From the pic I'm gonna guess that the run including the space under the coop is 4 x 12 ft (48 sq, ft.) Possibly enough room for 4 or 5 hens depending on the breed/size.

Very nice! I see you live in central Florida. With the hurricane coming your way best to secure that. Please stay safe!

Nice looking coop and run. I have a couple of suggestions. 1) that looks like OSB board and not plywood. Get it painted as soon as possible! Moisture will start to deteriorate and rot it rather quickly. 2) You mention coons, chicken wire will not stop coons or other predators. I would cover at...

It wasn't just the elk shed that made me curious. It was your Handle FreshPow and the pic of you on a mountain bike. You look like someone I know. As you can seen I'm from the San Luis Valley. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say you live near the Arkansas River and Monarch Ski area.

This appeared on my facebook page with the following caption: ""We're gonna build a henhouse. I build the best henhouses. And we're gonna make the foxes pay for it." I couldn't stop laughing.

I'm not discounting Sylvester017 experience, however mine has been different. My ramps are 8 inches wide and the entrance to the coop is only 24 inches from the ground. Most chickens should have no problem even without a ramp. Silkies may be a bit different never raised any. It's just a matter...

As for the nest boxes 18 inches off the floor should work well so they have more room however from the pics looks like you have lots of open floor space so that may not be a concern. Obviously you plan to enter your coop to gather eggs. Many like the idea of having outside access to eggs. I've...

I haven't made an effort to train my 2 dogs. They don't bark at my hens or chase them up and down the run. I have seen 1 of my dogs snatch a wild bird and devour it in 2 bites. The other one the previous owners allowed to go feral and was know for killing sheep, thus us rescuing it from a...

Everybody's dogs are different. I have 2 that I rescued from shelters. Based on their past history I would never let my ladies free range and keep them in a predator proof run with grazing boards so they have access to fresh grass that grows up through the wire. I live in rural Colorado...

I wouldn't think you would need a heat lamp living in California especially when you say it rarely gets down to freezing. I live in the rocky mountains of Colorado. Seen it get down to -30 F. Never used a heat lamp and my ladies do just fine.
