About a week and a half old, no losses so far. I think all of the ones I was hoping would be pullets are actually cockerels, they've already started mock sparring.
from the app or mobile browser it lets me upload once out of every 15 tries or so. it's a bit touchy.
here are some better photos of the fluff butts, just because they so cute and who doesn't like chick pics.
Is this the SSH? does the color look right?
Beard and muff on this one by looks...
The ameracauna chick didn't make it. There was far too much moisture left in the egg and he drowned. The buff orp also died before pipping externally. So final count is 17 chicks.
The little lav orp pulled through and is doing fantastic, I think she was just exhausted and early. I'm just waiting on an ameracauna that is preparing to zip and a buff orp that is internally pipped but nothing through the shell yet.
End of day, had 3.5 more hatch. 2 marans, an olive Egger and the .5 is a lavender orp that was shrink wrapping and had not progressed after 30 hours. Looks like it's yolk hasn't absorbed yet though so it's sitting in the egg rather listless. I gave it some acv, garlic and honey water to give it...
The flock so far.
All are from the mixed breed eggs except one which was supposed to be pure bred silver spangled hamburg. But the only one that fits the bill on color has feathered feet. Wish I'd seen that one hatch.
One buff orpington hatched as well and is still in the bator, 4 other breeder...
Up to 5 so far, all from the mixed eggs. The polish (mix I think?) Hatched. Has a beautiful vaulted skull and a pretty solid white head. Three are identical and one looks chocolaty with a slight hint of blue. 4 of the mixed eggs show no pips, and 2 are pipped and resting.
So far, of the 10...
I have at least 2 internal pips in the mixed breed eggs!
They're a little ahead of schedule since they're not due till Sunday.
Also a few of the air cells seem to have gotten larger in some of the pure breed eggs, so here's to hoping!
Lock down begins tomorrow!
And we have another curve ball to deal with. Even though I've been doing a dry incubation and the humidity has been steady around 35% the air cells don't look large enough. Nothing I can do to fix it either. Hopefully at least one hatches!!
Down another egg, one of the detatched air cell embryos died. I'm not very impressed with the breeder. I've lost most of the orpington eggs, are they generally a hard to hatch breed or am I just dealing with poor genetics?
I've done zip ties as well. Just watch if you put them on small chicks to make sure they don't get too tight as the bird grows.
My phone won't let me upload photos anymore either.
No need to mash it, the cat food if dry should be soaked but otherwise they can handle small chunks. They're not a species that regurgitate to their young, they get small whole foods.
Lost a few more. One looks like a day 6 or 7 quitter and one was probably lost today. Plus removed another dud. Down to 21 eggs from 30.
I have another that looks like a dud but it's shell is dark enough I'm not comfortable calling it yet.
Hopefully no more die.
