One of my "color projects" for this year is producing a pumpkin bodied silver/grey rooster. I will be using the pure Brazilian 8 pound rooster in my avatar, as well as a bigger all pumpkin Brazilian/Thai 9 pound rooster over silver/grey Asil Thai hens. Some of the hens are black greys, some are blue greys. Also using the 8 pound blue & grey Kulang Asil cock over the pumpkin Brazilian Thai hens.
Hello, I have a question, why for cock fighting do the cockerels get their feathers shaved off? Surely for fighting they’d offer the bird much needed protection
Not a PC question so sort of hard to answer without offending someone or someone getting the wrong ideas. I wondered if any of the traditions had practical applications or reasons behind them for keeping healthy birds or flocks. Thus I have done some research on it.
Disclaimer I am not an expert on this and in no way do I condone the illegal and cruel sport of fighting birds. Nor do I know exactly which style is being asked so I am thinking you mean the Asian look of pretty naked stags. This is just my non expert opinion.
Tradition... a lot of things are simply done blank way and no one can give you a good answer why.
Fashion... it looks cool. Like the morons tattooing birds now.
Local Custom... falls under tradition.
Heat Dissipation... helps bird cool self and not become overheated in certain climates. So benefits would be improved stamina and prevention of accidental death through heat stroke.
Wound Treatment... easier to see and treat bird’s wounds right away. Benefit bird survival rates go up.
Sanitation... many traditional herb washes applied to birds before and after are wonderfully antibacterial, antiviral, and anti parasite. A thorough soaking is easier on a more Naked bird. Benefit disease prevention between birds and flocks.
Conditioning... some countries have traditions of gradually toughening up the skin this is generally done to defeathered areas. Feathered areas often defeathered are the ones most likely to loose feathers in the first place. Benefit prevention of injury.
Chicken Psychology... it has been suggested by science the color red and the more of it a rooster displays is a sign of health and dominance. Since combs and wattles are often removed it is possible someone along time ago realized more red skin displayed another way psyched other roosters out and thus a tradition was born. Benefit the other rooster might run away.
Again I do not condone fighting roosters, I did however wonder about why the game breeds are so different and what the origins or reasoning is behind certain customs associated with them was as well. The above conclusions are mine others might disagree. Again I am interested with history, traditional healing, health maintance of birds and genetics. Thus my interest is pretty academic and geared toward understanding health benefits, inherited behavior, effects of culture on genetics of birds and how I can apply useful info to my birds. I do not believe in fighting birds, but understanding how to exercise your birds might improve life expediency of any roosters being kept for fun, show and breeding purposes.
Hopefully BYC understands I am not encouraging bad human behavior.

Hi, do you sell hatching eggs? I got some really good quality spangled thai pullets, but unfortunately I don't have them any more. So I want to get some top quality birds, and I have seen that you have good birds. You know your birds better than no body, so tell me which of them are good fighter, strong, and beautiful appearance. I personally like your blue and spangled birds.
