The Waltons or Little House On The Prairie?

I'm going out on a limb here, HATED the little house TV series. I loved the books as a kid and the TV stories drifted way too far away from the original. I loved the stories so much that I read Rose Wilder Lane's biography of her mother, and several other biographies. I wanted the real stories. I've visited at least one place that the Ingalls family lived, and it all was very interesting. I'm also very greatful that I live in the here and now. I've lived without central heating and without running water in the winter time, its not fun. As far as I'm concerned, hot running water is the definition of civilization.

I want to add here that I prefer the books by the real Laura Ingalls Wilder as opposed to the tv show. I have read the biographies and the works by her daughter. It is well worth all of your children or grandchildren reading her stories from book one and working their way through Rose's work on her mother. Wonderful stories.

The real Walton's Mountain is not far from Charlottesville in Schuyler, Va, down in Nelson County. We took the kids down but I would advise you all to wait and go when the museum is open for free on their anniversary and not to pay the $6 entry fee if you are interested. It is ok to look at and read all the stuff but it is not a 'museum'. It is like a 7th grade social studies fair at best. It is a shame really.

The old store that was the model for Ike's store on the tv show is in the area as well. My kids like to stop at the Covesville Store (remember that from the 1st Christmas movie?) and get jams or jelly and walk through the antiques that are for sale.

I get in the mood round about November to watch the Walton's Christmas Special and love it so much I bought it for myself last year. Patricia Neil is one of my long time favorite actresses. I ususally watch it once a day from Thanksgiving to just before Christmas - I have to have time to watch A Christmas Story about Ralphie - "You'll shoot your eye out, kid!" LOL

I love both shows.....DD was named after one of the girls on the Waltons!!...and that long ago too!...lol

I grew up without TV. I've never seen any of these shows.

Or any of the others I've seen mentioned here lately.

I wonder if my parents knew we'd be scarred for life? Or unable to participate an many a conversation?

I did read the Little House books though, and we are definitely NOT the Wilders. Mostly because of the 50" plasma TV hanging in our family room. (I'd post a pic, but it seems almost pornographic)

This has been really interesting.

I've read all the LIW )and related( series and loved them.
The tv show was 'just tv' --- even tho I have had a crush on Michael Landon since Bonanza.

My secret passion is Ann Of Green Gables.
I watch part of it on dvd almost every Sunday.
I adore the books and re-read them often. The characters are nearly real to me.

What about Marjorie Rawlings?
I was hooked by 'The Yearling' and her books on living 'naturally' in N FL were inspirational.

It's a 'dream' to move to a total backwoods place and live off the land.
Just a dream...

Defiantly Little House. I grew up watching it and my DD loves to watch the reruns. We have also read all of the Little House books, The Caroline books (Laura's mother) and the Rose series (Laura's daughter). Yea, I defiantly say Little House.

May I ask when and where you grew up? We lived out in the country and could only get 3 or 4 channels but jeez...no t.v.?

Bet you are really smart though

And I could never choose between the two. They are both good wholesome shows that you just don't see anymore.
