    Pet crate size

What size do you recommend/use for a chicken? I want to get a couple of wire pet crates to have on hand for emergency/and or break a broody hen. I have those plastic pet carriers but it's hot here and feel the wire ones would be best. The puppy pens and another pen we have are kind of big to use...

Going to build a new duck house

The plan is to build a new duck house. Husband wants a walk in type. We will most likely put it in a different spot. I'm wondering how difficult it would be to get the ducks to go in at night if the house is different and not in the same place. LOL The khakis don't like change. Will I need to...

    The hitch hiker

Last month a tiny kitten hitched a ride on the underside of my husband's truck. We don't know from when or where. The neighbor's cat alerted to it. Took us about 40 minutes to get her out as she would travel from the spare tire in the back to somewhere in the middle of the truck (and it was...

Considering separating one hen with her own coop

I have a sapphire gem hen with a leg injury since she was a chick. She's mostly a loner. The others seem to chase her off and otherwise bother her. We've been feeding her/giving treats separately for awhile. Many nights lately, she would rather sleep in the run than go into the house. I have to...

    DIY Feeder/waterer Pros/Cons?

Found this video on youtube that I thought interesting for feeder/waterer. Looking for input--pros/cons. I'm more interested in the waterer for the ducks but thought it might work if we went away for a weekend for the chickens too. Also, anything similar you might have tried?

Introduced ducklings to the adults but have questions

There's only 2 of the original 4 adult ducks which is why we got some ducklings. Ducklings are 2 weeks old and got introduced to the adults for the first time yesterday. They're out there in the pen again today. (separated but together) One of the adults seems very interested in the littles...

    Possum in a cluttered shed

I think there is a possum living in a very cluttered shed behind my duck house. Not sure how to go about getting rid of it as it can be hiding behind anything in there. LOL You have to move stuff out of the way to walk around in there...which is why suggestions are needed. If Tractor Supply has...

    A great white pest

Darn bird has been hanging around for a few days. Flies up on top of the shed scaring the daylights out of the chickens and ducks. Fun to see close up but hope it moves on soon.

    5 yr olds done laying?

We haven't seen a duck egg in months. Do you think they're done laying at 5yrs old? Stress from losing a sister a few weeks ago? (after slowing down from laying during winter)? They didn't eat much during that time but are back to eating regularly.

    The waiting begins

Ordered 4 ducklings with today's hatch date. (Metzer) Haven't heard anything yet. I hate that they had to be shipped. Waiting for shipping confirmation and then the worry if they will arrive alive.

    Preparing for ducklings

Ordered some ducklings. Hatch date is May 8, so should arrive the 9th or 10th. 1. I have some Poultry Cell here. Wondering if that would be ok to add to their water the first day to help them or should something else be used? 2. For those who have had ducklings shipped, should I open the box and...

    Egg color question

All our hens are brown egg layers. The last week or two we are getting a near white to white egg from (someone) one of them. Is this something to worry about (a deficiency) or it just happens sometimes? Edited to add: Just checked the white ones and the shells are strong.

    Pen to pen walkway(?) advice

We had to remove the netting we had over the larger area of our yard because of leaves and sticks always weighing it down and tearing it. The ducks are unhappy being locked up in the pond area (not enough land area for fun foraging). Since I couldn't think of another solution to give them the...

How to get new layer to lay in a nest box?

The 16 wk old wyandotte is laying her eggs in the run behind the shade cloth we hung up. How should I get her to lay in the nesting box? The first time she checked them out (one day last week) one of the older hens chased her out of the coop so I'm assuming she is afraid to go in there. She...

15wk old will be laying soon?

The wyandottes are 15 weeks old. One of them has her red comb and wattles. Last few days she has squatted when I walked by. Does this mean she will be laying soon? Or possible we still have many weeks left? I want to keep an eye out in case the older hens don't let her in the nest box. (I have...

    Wyandotte hen?

11-12 weeks old. It's more the behavior that has me wondering. The comb and wattles aren't overly big and more a dark pink than red (I think). The pictures were taken 5-10 minutes apart.

    Name of coop

My husband wants me to make a sign for our coop. Not sure if I am capable of carving the name in the board he gave me, but I'd like to try and then paint in the words. I don't think my little wood engraver would be much help here. Any tips or best tool to use? Also... I'm thinking of going with...

    Solar cooking

In September I ordered a Haines 2.0 solar cooker. Finally got around to trying it out. We have some cornbread in it now. I've never cooked anything with the sun before. Not sure how long foods will take. Anyone use a solar cooker and have some useful tips?

9am and already one of those days...

This morning one of the Bigs (older hens) got herself stuck in the Littles pen while trying to steal their food. They are all on the same food (All Flock). LOL... It might be time to remove the pen and come up with other ways for a safe space as the Littles are getting too big anyway. We have a...
