Oh no we have 13 chicks!
For funzies and cuz I know y’all love em- here are some of the others. The photogenic ones are a Sapphire Splash, Barred Rock, and a Buckeye. The rest of the flock is: Dominique, another Splash, 2 BCMs, 2 EE, Black Australorpe, Gold Laced Polish (who I know might be lonely as a single poof, we think he’s a boy and will be rehomed) and a Buff Orp. I am obsessed and wholeheartedly embracing my new identity as a chook mom🤪

Hey all! First time follower of this thread and I was recommended to ask a breed query here for all your wisdom. Thanks in advance! I bought this chick at my local Wilco Farm Store here in WA as a Delaware but it’s not feathering out as expected. We think maybe it’s a white leghorn pullet? A bit disappointed cause that’s not the breed we chose and she’s a BOSSY giant chick, seriously bold and pecky. 5 weeks old, comb is larger but mostly yellow with yellow legs and pure white feathers. Hint of pink wattle on the chin and not a speck of black or smut/barring. What do your experienced eyes see? Cockerel? Breed? TY 🐓

Edit: this is not my only chick, she is one of 13 in a mixed breed flock!
"What breed or gender is this?" Is the forum umbrella that will put you in contact with people who raise Delaware. I'm not sure anyone on this thread have any, so experience might be limited.

1. Birds can change quite a bit up to and including the 9-12 week moult. That one usually brings in the adult colors. Dunno if Delaware are one of those breeds that change alot at that one or not.

2. Colombia markings (Delaware, colombian wyandotte, light Brahma, light sussex are all marked thus) usually (but not always) start as a fluffy yellow chick with grey tones (the grey amount varies).

3. Leg color can help with breed identification, but can be affected by hatchery stock not being bred for breed standards, so some color variation can be expected. Dunno Delaware standard leg color.

Ah, ty! yeah, I took a specific suggestion to post here, but you’re right that thread sounds more like what I might be looking for. I’ll see if BY Bob has any weigh in if she’s a leghorn pullet :)

Oh my goodness, you are so lucky. Red Barn silkies are soo hard to come by as they have limited availability. I stalk their facebook page and I promise you they are high quality and you will have 2 beauties in a few months time. The Partridge chick that may turn black, I may be wrong on but they could end up looking like 2 of mine. I had 2 chipmunk chicks hatch out last spring.
This is how they both look now. Black with a even distribution of brown feathering throughout.

I joined their private FB page, apparently this is where you can actually see what they have for offer. You still have to stalk the page but it is a little easier to get them on that page. The main page is ridiculous, you have seconds to reply or they are gone.

People are truly a little chicken crazy this year. I think it’s worse here right now than the pandemic was for chicken buying. I went to both our local Tractor supply and to rural king today to pick up supplies and feed. 😱 It looked like the bread isle before a hurricane warning. I was able to get what I needed but my goodness. Not a single chick of any breed anywhere. Feeders, waters almost none to be found even wood chips were almost gone.

But yeah I am thrilled. Perfect for my daughter who is super excited and has been wanting one for almost a year now. Now to say a little prayer to the chicken gods that at least one is a pullet.

Yours are beautiful 😍 I will be happy no matter how the little partridge feathers out. It will be fun to watch and see what happens. I will take pictures as soon as we get them home tomorrow evening.

Chicks are nearly impossible to come by here too. It's crazy. Even the stores are surprised.

There's nothing like it. Chickens are so entertaining, right from the start. You have a great selection!!!

Yep...that was me. 😁 I thought for sure Rural Mouse would know, but at least she knew where to go get the info! :yesss:

I asked a landscape guy about what to do with my wild rose problem and he said to rent a goat.
He was dead serious.
You should! They do a great job efficient and you don’t have to risk more scratches.
Easter Portraits

I took their Easter Photos today!View attachment 4089558View attachment 4089559
I love these photos, so cute! The eyeliner on the second chick is so pretty. I am looking forward to seeing if that stays when she feathers in. 🤞
Holly and Jolly

Awll, still hoping both Holly and Jolly are girls. They are both as cute as can be.
Dark partridge is only something I've encountered in your silkie colors. In other birds (at least as adults) I'd say it's black with leakage. If they start out as chipmunk colored chicks, it's totally outside my current genetics understanding....hence the rabbit hole.

However, DH and kid dropped me at work today and went off to get a new washing machine. My research rabbit hole tonight involves finding all the instructions as the paper booklet just has all the safety warning stuff and nothing else.

I appreciate it when/if you want to dig into it. No hurry, just curious 🧐 to learn more. Both parents were solid black so it wasn’t intentional but instead a genetic hiccup, one of the parents must have the recessive gene for partridge. Idk if that makes a difference or not.
Let us know if you do. I'll have to bring Mrs BY Bob over to meet it! 😆
Ha! You should bring her here. In our tiny, tiny town we have a petting zoo. I was skeptical when it opened and worried I would find mistreated animals. What I found instead was a true gem. They have zebras, rheas, emus, elk, deer, a sloth, a giraffe.. I could go on but list is quite long. They are all wonderfully cared for and they have a very large goat area that one can enter and you are immediately surrounded by 30+ goats of various breeds and sizes. She would just love it! It’s quite the experience.
There are so many Silkie varieties experimented by breeders nowadays that are not SOP ~ Dark Partridge, Red, Cuckoo, Blue Cuckoo, Buff Partridge, Porcelain, Moorhead, etc etc...
Yes, I have noticed that as well, in many breeds but particularly in Brahmas, Silkies, Polish, Bantam Cochins, and Orpington’s who all seem to have a very large number of project colors.

I wanna see your Dominique ~ one of our friendliest pesty outgoing people-friendly chicks to adulthood. We got ours 3 days old & they weren't afraid of us humans right from the start:
