They are just adorable.

Oh high and mighty Queen Aurora....

Me thinks it is time you make a break for it and run inside the next time the door is opened. You should be saving some glares for your humble slave...er...servant.

Shhhhhhh 🤫

I have never dealt with a broken bone so I will let others provide advice. I don't know if this helps but Aurora has spent her whole life with a broken toe that did not get set.

I sincerely hope you get the help you need so she gets help.
I was thinking of her! Remembering your post with her unmistakable print! - Was it in the snow?

Same foot, same toe. I'm not keen on trying to "reset" it before taping it down, which would inflict a lot more pain to do without having the expertise to do it correctly anyway. So many chickens do have broken toes and seem to get by okay. But I did read that a permanent crook could be painful to walk on even after healing.

My goal is to relieve current pain at least. Hopefully it heals more straight but I've heard many people say taping in a boot didn't straighten it. But the boot seemed to relieve her today, she was running around on it and scratching with it, which she didn't want to do yesterday. But it would have to be on longer to really judge (e.g. if she's limping again by the end of day as she was today after the boot came off).

I slip Coco an aspirin once in a while. Her foot never healed completely and she walks with a limp. I can tell when she’s hurting from her foot.

Did you order the silicone boots?

Ok I will shush for a bit longer.

Actually tomorrow I will take the heat off of you and distract the Queen. I need updated pictures of the silkies so I can list their eggs for sale. I will post them so she can glare at me all she wants. I respect, admire and love our Great Queen Aurora. I do not fear her though. She is a fierce leader. I survived years of abuse from Momma Hen. That hen....now that hen I could fear at times.

I've been crazy busy and miss being on here regularly!

Annie has a broken toe. I think it is recent, and her foot is warm where her other foot is cool. I posted on the injuries thread but would love your input as to the best way to treat.

Her toe is turning sideways & under, she reaches forward in her stride and doesn’t want to let it flex at the back of her stride. Yesterday she would stand with her foot raised. Today I saw it once but think she’s more comfortable than yesterday.

I downloaded the "How to treat Avian fractures" manual, but didn't make a very good boot. https://theiwrc.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Duerr_Splinting_Manual_2010.pdf
It helped her, and she was comfortable on it, but it didn't last.

I won't try tonight, as I'd want to monitor it, but I'm wondering if a splint with vet wrap on the individual toe, wrapped around the foot to secure, would work? I did not have a premade boot but of course now have them on order. I could make a stiffer boot in the meantime, flexible styrofoam but a thin plastic lid underneath, and wrapped better.

Gave her liquid Tylenol last night, a bit difficult opening her beak and a sticky mess, then not seeing bruising today I gave her 1/2 baby aspirin which she gobbled up, about six hours apart, much easier. Thoughts?

Awww poor wee gal.

You can try to splint it with some Vet Wrap, if it’s moveable you can try to align it best you can.

What I found with Laverne when she amputated the end over toe, was that the Vet Wrap is stiff enough to align the digit. It’s pretty fiddly wrapping a toe, what I did was cut a piece of the wrap that goes from the tip of the toe up over the ankle.

Then I cut a hole for the back toe.

Cut across the wrap from both sides of the wrap to make ‘flaps’ that can be wrapped around the toe. You will have to fiddle around with it a bit.

Make sure to not cut all the way through the wrap.

I used a paper towel as a template to figure out how to make the bandage for Laverne so I didn’t ruin any vet wrap.

When you wrap it don’t do it too tight, you should be able to pinch it a bit easily. And in fact to make sure it sticks I pinch it along the end to ensure it sticks and doesn’t unravel.
