    My broken legged-chicken story

So, I have a beautiful little brown leghorn. One of my favs, 3 years old and still laying strong. So, one morning I find a dead chicken in the coop and my leghorn's leg swinging. The leg was broken, clean, up by the hip (the femur, near the hip head). No blood or wounds. I was advised to put...

Oooo OOoooo Ooooo! Anatolian Shepherd FAMOUS!!!

Took the kids to see Truth About Cats and Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore last night. One of the lead dogs is an Anatolian! I drooled over the training in that movie.... there was this Rotty that was so focused on his off screen trainer he almost looked like a statue. Anyhow, the Anatolian is...

    Had to kill my rooster...

He came at me today with such force and fury it shocked me. I was bending over in the coop and his first rush hit the door which whacked me in the forehead. He was going for my face. Then I stood up thinking it would scare him off, but he came at me and I booted him. I thought that was that and...

    Neighbors loose horses...ignored our info...

So, we have some neighbors we aren't too close to, but do drive by once in a while. A week ago, I saw one of their horses pop a board (old cruddy board fence with rails on the WRONG SIDE) as he leant over to get grass over the fence. I thought "They could benefit for a bit of hotwire" Well...

Husband changed mind about more kids...

This is more pain on top of more pain. Husband has decided against any more kids. His reason.. he doesn't want to be raising kids in his 50's. Our history: Been together since the age of 17. Had a daughter at the age of 20. Lost her in a car accident when she was 7. We have my son who survived...

Janesville WI.. please provide postive input!

http://gazettextra.com/news/2009/nov/16/man-wants-change-chicken-ordinance/ Most people here view chicken raising as backward... the last time it was put up to a city council, one member actually was quoted as worrying that "hispanics" would be slaughtering all over the place, and that...

No longer expecting...l(PREGNANT MOMS DONT READ)

I lost my baby girl, Olivia, last week at 33.5 weeks gestation. Abruption of placenta followed by eclampsia. I almost didn't survive. She was perfect. She just looked like she was born asleep and never woke up. Dark hair. Birthmarks like her brother. THey made me give birth rather than a...

So sad. My first dog(black lab) and cancer.

This sucks. I had family dogs as a kid, and seeing how my parents treated them (neglected vet visits, never neutering, chaining and ignoring, DROPPING THEM OFF AT THE VET TO BE PUT TO SLEEP and then telling me about it later) Well, it taught me a lot about dogs and how to treat them. So I got...

    Dang! Rooster went psycho overnight...

Our very pretty "exotic" that we got with our chick order is no more. He was a Silver Spangled Hamburg (I hear a lot of people got these this year) and was very shy and retiring until yesterday. My 4 YO was in the backyard when I went inside to put some juice away. In the three seconds I was...

    CPS/Child welfare/DCYF info

Hey all... www.fightcps.com Here is a great site for issues concerning DCYF/CPS etc. I read Quail Antwerps dilemma and while I am happy that things turned out well and they got a good social worker, there are just as many families who could have been torn apart. I wish I was exaggerating but...

My McMurray Rare chick... Pullet? Cockerel? Breed?

When we first got the little thing, it was mottled light bluish/silver all over. Now It has a red rose comb popping up and is black and white with purplish feet/earlobes. I thought Easter egger but come on, this was supposed to be my RARE chickie.. This is after it hoped out of my hands and...

Oh what is my pretty lil brown hen??

SHe lays white eggs and is about 1 year in this pic. She has such pretty detailing in her mahogany feathers and is not very flighty but is not lovey like my Delawares. Also, she is standard size.

Update:Delaware or Leghorn day olds??(figured it out!)

:yiipchickThanks for the help guys! After seeing your pics with the week old Dels with black tipped wings, I started turning itty-bitty wings over. Sure enough, 5 had white yellow feathers to the root (leghorns) and three had little gray flecks lining the underside of the wing. So now, I have...

Arg! Any suggestions on teeling Delaware/Leghorns apart?

So, I ordered 5 white leghorns and 3 delawares. Got them today and cannot for the life of me see any difference- feet, combs, color, skin/eye color... is there anyone here familiar with chicks of these breeds and knows someting Ii can look for to tell them apart? I split this chick order but it...

Is it true a frostbitten comb makes a rooster sterile?

Heard this one today. My easter egger had about half of his very large rose comb frostbitten, depite vaseline and lights (it got to -17 here). Today a fellwo chicken raiser told me that if a comb gets frozen, the rooster goes sterile. I can't see how this would be true- he is mating, so still...

Are Wyandotte eggs usually this huge?

I am amazed. These suckers are the size of a small peach. Wow. They are mostly single yolkers. Next to it is one from my buff orpington (or my red star). Both hens are 36 weeks, from MM hatchery.

    Is this a Blue Andalusian?

I'm pretty sure that's what my rooster is... and yes, this is a rooster for sure, he is a nice crower. It is just that most breed standards for blue andalusians show a lighter bird.

    Hen? Roo? breed?

I don't know the breed... maybe a plymouth barred cross? THe comb is HUGe but he/she hasn't started crowing and it doesn't act aggressive at all. I haven't noticed her nesting, though... It came in a mishmosh from MM and is 36 weeks.
