A lot of it depends on age, cycle of brooding, and available space, but I don't trust my pure asil adult hens around others of her kind. They do fine with barnyard fowl, the barnyard fowl learn quick to give them a wide birth. Sometimes you will have problems with barnyard roosters. If asil hen...

With Oriental games, most of them you have to be careful with the hens being able to get to each other, let alone cocks. Results will vary from one line to another. Don't really know why Sumatras get lumped in with Oriental games, they are more of an ornamental gamefowl derivative. I have asil...

Sometimes my late summer early fall hatches do better. Early summer hatches game up and have to be separated for winter, but the late ones can be left together with the hen if she doesn't start laying again and get ornery. It is easier on them if they can huddle up a little when it gets cold...

Nice bird. In terms of old school Malay type, if you go back far enough Malays are Kulangs that just got renamed according to where some Dutch merchant vessel left port.

This is my line of Asil Ga noi cross birds. Does anyone else see broodiness in cock birds? He is all Mr. Mom with chicks of this age, but don't let the stags start showing a little red in the comb, had to take this one out about a week after this pic.

You would probably have to have a very pure line of birds and be very familiar with those birds for scale reading to work at all. And then it wouldn't be a guarantee. There are a lot more things that people should use to pick their birds for breeding etc. before using scale reading, IMO.

The old masters, to whom we are indebted for our fowl, saw fit to hold certain traits as desirable. First and foremost, I think everyone would agree that Asil shanks should be square, that is, flat on the front. This is a sign of purity and good breeding. The scales themselves are more of a...

When we are looking at legs, the primary thing we are looking for is square shanks. Scale reading is a different matter, and is an art in and of itself. (That I know nothing about.) All angles of the leg are looked at, particular attention is given to front scale just above the toes and the...

#5 shows good type for a Saipan, most of the hatchery ones I've seen pictures of have the shorter neck and upward arching tail like #11.

Nope, the Cornish has been a mutt since it's inception, They have asil in them, but a lot of other stuff, too. Shamos are most definitely not a version of Asil, version of oriental game, yes, but not the same as asil. The Shamo's name is a a Japanese adaptation of the word "Siam" the old word...

Malay is a little of a stretch of imagination itself, some of the same thought processes that went into naming Malays "Malays" named Native Americans "Indians" and mistook North American native poultry for birds from "Turkey". Not that there aren't some people with darn nice Malay, but it's most...

The ones in the picture in the catalog have bare breast bones. The ones you end up with might be northern saipans. You can help your orientals by giving them a 1x4 or 1x6 to roost on, instead of a round pole. Watch to make sure they cover their toes, if they are not clever enough to cover their...
