Pork and Beans are getting big!

My little pair of troublemakers turned 4 weeks old this past Sunday! As they get bigger, so do their personalities. These guys sure know how to make me laugh. I suspect Pork (barred rock mother, polkie father) is a cockerel, with that prominent red comb coming in. He loves to cuddle and perch...

    Hen or roo?

I’m a new chicken owner and I’m curious if my barred rock is really a roo! It’s comb seems really red for being around 7 weeks old! The comb looks a little more red in person then in the pictures. Also the most dominate of the group.

    “Barred Rock” pullet?

Can any chicken experts help this newbie. I purchased this barred rock chick from tractor supply, no idea how old she was but she wasn’t a teeny tiny chick and already had wing feathers. I’m guessing she’s now between 5-6wks. She’s all black & beginning to get red feathers on her neck …but no...

Cockerel or Pullet (Hopefully a Pullet!)

I know it’s too early to tell, but there are rather obvious characteristics with this 2 week old chick! 1) Has light feet compared to my other ‘female’ Barred Rock chick 2) Feather growth is very slow compared to my other chicks (who are the same age) 3) The small feathers it does have are...

New members here!! So recently me and my girlfriend decided to get six chicks from our local orschlns that said four were barred rocks(other two rhode island reds) but after reading some on here I fear this may not be correct. Is this a black sex link roo?!

Hi! We bought 5 sex link chicks from a local feed store. 2 are gold sexlink, 1 is a red sex link, and 2 are black sex links. We were told they were all female, but one of the black sexlinks had a white spot on their head. I didn’t realize a white spot on a black sex link meant male, and it...

    Could we have a roo?

This is only the second time raising chicks and we picked up twenty from the local farm store. We’re hoping we might get one rooster from the batch since we will want to free range them once they are old enough. One of the barred rocks was clearly from a prior hatching than the rest and was the...

Hello! I desperately need help. I have a Barred Rock that I believe is laying internally, and I don’t know what to do. I discovered she wasn’t doing well when I picked her up and her abdomen was as hard as a softball. I tried to feel around in her vent, and I’m honestly not sure what I felt. The...

    Egg mites?? Egg bound hen??

Hello all. Recently I posted about a leghorn I had who was exhibiting signs of being egg bound, and was laying soft shelled eggs. After an epsom salt bath and some calcium, she was laying eggs again and is back to her usual self. Another one of my chickens, a BR, is now seeming quite bound up...

Sapphire Gem mixed with Barred Rock?

I bought Speedwagon as a chick from the Atwood’s and he was labeled as a sapphire gem but I think he’s mixed with barred rock. Or maybe a different breed entirely? He’s about two feet tall. Very large. Thoughts and opinions? Sorry for the lack of pictures, he’s very shy, but he’s the big grey...
