Oh, and I have another batch of eggs coming. I had won tux eggs about a week after the jumbo/mix eggs and Zach lost my order. They just got sent this week. My daughter, Dolly, loves the tux color and we only have the one. Those will be set tomorrow or Friday.
Good morning all! I've been busy with family all week. I have a house full of kids, grandkids, parents, and cousins
My poor quail aren't getting any attention. I'm pretty sure I had 62 successfully hatch, two that died, so 60 left. I need to check egg shells and see what all did...
12 more in the brooder today. I have a couple oddballs that I might have to put down.
This one is just flailing around on it's back. It seems the late Hatcher's always have problems.
I'm up! I just checked it. Something like 15 or so hatched. I've been away visiting my brand new grandbaby, so haven't been paying attention. I thought, better go check and whoa! All kinds of babies :wee
I don't even have the brooder ready.
We got home late last night and I went...

Skinned and ready to open up.
Cutting along the back
Cut along both sides
Remove back
Now I try to pop it open by breaking...
ditto on the cage room. I'm planning to get cage wire this weekend though and expand my pens. I've been selling off my chicken and turkey flock and plan to move the quail grow out pens to the larger coop as soon as I have the flock decimated enough.
Candled my latest batch yesterday. The jumbos had the lowest development rate at 61%, followed by my backyard birds. The mixed eggs had 85% developed! All clear eggs were clear, no start and quits.
I've gone back to eating Keto, which means no carbs and those little 4 week old quail are looking quite appetizing. I don't know if I can wait another month! That recipe Kiki posted awhile back had me drooling. They are getting quite big, I'll have to compare them to my grown hens today...
I think my daughter finally gets it. She no longer gets upset when it's time to butcher. She does still talk to them at the end, which I don't think is a bad thing. She wants them to be happy right to the end, but has no problem butchering anymore. She went right out and snatched up a little roo...
