Mine go broody at the drop of a hat and make excellent mothers. I let two set together one time and all went well untill about a day after they hatched and they about killed each other fighting over the chicks!
I have to agree with Chris. If you want to show, start with stock from show birds. It took me almost 2 years to find my first show quality Japanese bantams, but there is no way I could have gotten that quality in even 5 years of breeding from inferior chickens. HOWEVER if you just want some...
If you want show quality Japanese the best way is to make it to some good shows, see the entries and talk to the exhibitors. Not only will you learn a lot, but you will make some contacts and possibly find a lead to some nice birds. Don't expect to get these for a song and dance, there is a...

First of all, I'm no expert. Secondly, I don't pretend to understand all of the genetics. However, a few things I have learned in my study of what's going on. Without lots of hatches, your numbers can be far off from your punnet square, it takes lots of numbers to get the percentages right...
The main thing I see is the posture is very upright for Japs. I know we don't always catch them at their best. I love the very tight u at the back/tail junction.
