Oriental Gamefowl Thread!

Again, great stags! Did you sell that one or did you have to cull him? You said he was part Saipan--do you breed Saipans? I've been looking for a reliable Saipan breeder for awhile now.

Ilia-I got some of Ideal's orientals last spring, just a few to check them out. I'll give you my results.

Asil- Good points-pearl eye, square shanks, very meaty build.
Bad points- white earlobes, very high tail, soft feathered, flighty.
It obviously had some asil blood in there somewhere.....Reminded me alot of an asil/American grade, but probably was not that...

Thai- Good points- no wattles, correct size and build, correct angle of body, tail correct, intelligent, personable, somewhat hard feathered, multiple spurs.
Bad points- Red or black eyes, not hard feathered enough to be pure.
Overall, these were not so bad. They could have been sumatra x cornish crosses, but, there was some sort of oriental blood in there somewhere, as they were partly hard feathered.

Shamo- Good points- Extremely hard feathered, very upright stance, very leggy, long necks, etc. No wattles.
Bad points- Red eyes, scrawny, not large enough by far, tail angle very upright.
Overall, it reminded me of a pea combed modern game-that is exactly what it looked like.

We ate the asil and the shamo, the asil was really meaty, the shamo was the skinniest thing I've ever seen. The thai was a female, she was kept, and has been an excellent layer of large brown eggs.

A pic of the Thai-

Hey, thanks for including the IDEAL stats. I've been wanting to know the quality of their orientals for quite some time. Have you ordered Saipans or Sumatras from them? If so, what's the quality of them, and did they reach the right weights?

This is Shiva, a Shamo, an ex fighting cock who my boyfriend adopted:

He now lives in his own cage.

One of the hens (a mix? sorry I can't remember yet, new to the chicken world...)

And this is Eagle:

Awesome looking stags. I'm glad to hear you rescued the ex-fighter

Say, I noticed that the stags run with other roosters: how on earth does that happen without the Shamos killing the other breeds? Were they raised together as chicks or something?

Sure thing! I thought about putting Sumatras in the list, but for some reason I changed my mind

But sure, I'd love to see some photos!

Thanks Gallorojo

I'm certainly not surprised on the feather quality and most of all, not the tail angle. If there's something hatcheries seem to have in ALL their breeds, it's a tail that is too high. I'm assuming it is something to do with production lines, and crossing in more productive birds, which naturally in this case have higher tails. (American or English Games?)

Oh and size. I wouldn't expect a hatchery Shamo to be big or meaty at all, same as any other breed that should be.

Glad to hear of the Thais though.

I think they're relatively easy to breed commercially though, as their tails aren't required to be so low or small, their bodies aren't required to be so big, or lengthy, or meaty, and their size is not something to really talk about.

Love the Games I've been seeing, and nice Barred Bantam, Josh.

Still that comb irks me, but love the bird!

Just to let you all know that I will be uploading pics of my Russian Orloffs soon. Unfortunately, my sister's camera is a piece of junk and will not register with the comp., so I don't know when it will be
barnie.gif
They are IDEAL Poultry stock Orloffs, and seem to show it in their relative lack of quality

However, they have the classic oriental stance, and one of them (my cockerel) has a tremendous will to survive and trucked through what I believe to be a fractured leg with such resolve that his leg is practically normal now and he walks just about as normally as any other chicken. They're both nearly three months old and only weigh about two pounds--is that normal?

Gresh-I have not ordered Saipans, but have talked to many who have, and seen some pics. They are indeed large orientals, but not pure saipan, and not game, and they come in various colors. If all you want are big orientals, they will work. I did get some Sumatras, other than being TINY, they are good. I've seen some a lot of horrible hatchery Sumatras posted up on here, even seen people trying to sell obviously crossed up ones around here as pure. Mine all had/have everything right except for being too small.
