We had a poor field mouse try to get in the house last night - needless to say it was a dead mouse the moment it stepped over the threshold. Our Jack Russell stayed up all night waiting for it to appear from the radiator where it was hiding in by the front door and he was very pleased to present...
We've had three Jack Russels and no issues with juvenile or adult chickens. I think they are not as bad as larger terrier breeds. They can be a handful in other ways, but so are many working dog breeds - they take some training and it's good to get them from reputable sources.
Our Jack Russell is completely fine with the adult chickens, but I wouldn't trust him around young chicks. He was pecked by a broody once when he was young and now respects any chicken he sees - very cautious around them :) He comes in the coop with me all the time with no issues, but it is...
So sorry to hear about all of your rodent problems :(
I have yet to see a rat on the property and the mice are rare - so far no evidence in the coop or storage areas.
We have a Jack Russell that does away with any he sees. They're super efficient rodent hunters and can deal with rats well...
I haven’t been on for a while, but received six black copper Marans chicks last Thursday as a second line. I didn’t hatch any of my own this year, but will next spring when my current hens and rooster are approximately 1.5 years old.
Hi Everyone! Hope you’re having a great long weekend. 🙂
Just stopping by to share my pullet’s latest egg - she’s been laying for about two months now and they’re looking really nice. Consistently dark, large, and round.
I know I've seen it mentioned here and there, but what is a minimum recommended and an ideal time (I know these aren't always the same) to wait before hatching eggs from BCM. I have a pair hatched mid June 2020 that I would like to breed at some point in the future, but will wait until the time...
Oh dear. England's temperatures are so nice and mild - like where I grew up in B.C. I'm continually envious of my sister's winter photos from Wales and Somerset, where she is working as a veterinarian. Thank goodness myself and my chickens have antifreeze in our veins. :D
Eastern Canada says that you can give us back our winters now. Until this last week it was rainy, warm, muddy and snowless for the most part. We would like our cold temperatures back from where they've been hiding out in Texas :p Possibly the warmest winter on record where we are...
Hi Everyone! I got my very first egg from my Marans pullet today. This first photo was taken in bright light, so in person it looks a little darker. The shape isn't as round as I would like, but we'll see if that changes a bit with successive eggs.
I'm away from the chickens on a working trip...
He doesn’t have any white feathers or fluff elsewhere on his body, so it could be damaged feathers. I’ll pull them out and see if they grow back as black. Thanks for the advice!
And here are a few photos of the pullet, who is the same age. She wouldn’t stay still, so they’re not the best quality. One has her beside the cockerel.
