I recently moved the hen in with her son - ewww - hate to cross that close but this gal is getting up there in years (I think she's 4 now?) and who knows if she will survive another summer. I want to try and "clone" her basically. Crossing my fingers for a couple of hens that look just like...

Wanted to share pics of a chick I'm excited about - and get opinions on gender! Boy, or girl? Carries Mottling - also carries DUN - note the gray in the wing here: Dad is same Dad as Ant Farm's current top pick boy. Here's a couple pics of him: Mom is this hatchery NN...

The best thing is to get some mottled NN's from me DesertChic and add them for diversity. ;) LOL

Such a good question. The ones my neighbor got from Privett Hatchery (NM) were enormous size, kind of fan shaped tails. Loved their overall shape, build, structure! Would be interesting to know there "show standard" being as I see so many variations from the crosses.

Anyone interested in understanding "Dun" (which like Kev says has been called a bunch of different names!) - it's actually one of the easiest colors to understand in chickens! Which is why I was interested in working with it - simple and easy is *refreshing*! Dun is a dominant gene, and it...

No, the avoidance of Splash is because Splash can look like some of the really heavily mottled birds I've hatched, and I just need a clear picture of how much white is REALLY on any chicken - so I can evaluate it properly. It's not that I dislike how it looks, just don't want to be misguided...

And Kev, I'm thinking that when Khaki appears, it will make this look like the bold "Buff Mottled" color that I was trying to get when crossing to Buff Orps - because the grayish Dun areas would be pale Khaki - and the black tail feathers would also be pale Khaki - so the entire chicken would...

Being as I have already done 3+ years of intensive work to do something similar to Porcelain, you could also just work on making really awesome Dun Mille Turkens by working with what I have here. I have all the "ingredients" you would need to make really AWESOME birds. It would be most...

Don't discount the show thing offhand. A local young man bought a NN Aloha from me and entered in the fair in the "new variety" class at the State Fair and she won! Apparently the judge was quite interested in her! I had a friend look into what it took to add a new color or variety to...

I really liked the share on this NN article: http://www.aviculture-europe.nl/nummers/08e04a04.pdf The most interesting thing to me was the observation that the Naked Necks were the only ones able to survive in Africa's extreme heat. Sure does back up my personal experiences raising them...

I also wanted to point out something that is often overlooked when people talk about Porcelain color. When we think about that gorgeous pastel color, most of us are thinking of THIS: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/ac/da/61/acda61247451dfa1168c2e25cd909dd5.jpg But one of the...

It would not be a bad cross. Robin would pull her size down just a bit, he's not a big rooster, but this cross would really "lock in" some of the recessive traits I've been fighting for - like the yellow legs, the bright golden background colors. And the hen is big and stout, so she would for...

Mottling appears on black just as easily as it does on red and buff. The only color that has "resisted" my attempts to mottle it has been Buff-tailed Buff - breeds like Buff Orpington and Buff Rock. I read somewhere that even the most knowledgeable of chicken genetic experts does not know...

FYI - New Hampshires pick up Mottling (spots) like a DREAM. I used a NHR roo (hatchery stock) early on to improve type and size and his grand-chicks were spotted as can be! So "Earl" would be a fabulous cross with spotty NN hens. The babies will lose the spotting, but it will pick right...

"Zazzle" would be a just fine rooster to use with this program. What I'd suggest is keep the barred in only one parent - so you don't end up with homozygous barred anything that will only produce 100% barred chicks. Not that barred is bad mind you - it's just you end up committed to only one...

I have zero idea what the purple comb tips are all about? I wish I did know! It has shown up in a few of my boys - I don't know if it's from fighting or what? Because it's not cold enough in Phoenix for frostbite? Possible it's related to injury, as don't have any choice but to house...
